Ptex library
Hi all, I emailed disney about their per vertex texturing tool ptex and they replied really quickly, heres the email:
It will be free open source under the bsd license. We use Maya and PRMan primarily, but we paint textures in a proprietary system. We've spoken to many of the major vendors about ptex already, but it wouldn't hurt for you to express your interest in ptex to your vendors of choice.
So thats very cool, obviously maya and or deep paint for example needs to support it to generate the mapping images or whatever it uses but i was wondering if there were any plans for support in 3delight, that would be ultra cool.
also heres the link to the ptex page

thanks everyone, jon

Re: Ptex library
It would be good to offer this as a baking format. prman has the (rather complicated) option of going from a point cloud to a ptex file.
If it could be simply written out directly and read back in as a baking format, as an alternative to ptc files it would be a great option to have.
I think the main advantages are that they can be much smaller than ptc file equivilant - I can't confirm or deny as I haven't really played with them yet.

Re: Ptex library
Ptex are really efficient in memory footprint with big texture map and nice to implement in a pipeline. SO I agree with simon on this.

Re: Ptex library
The arguments to use p-tex sound promising, getting a developer to impliment it in a 3d paint system is the ideal situation but in the shorter term how hard would it be (for someone who knows how) to make a utility that uses 3delight to bake a ptex from a high res texture and an some geometry? Obviously this wouldn't save any time with uvs as you'd have to lay them out in order to bake but anything to help memory management is a plus.
Also it sounds like a few of you have used ptex, how did you find it? are there any drawbacks of this sort of pipeline?

Ptex are not more efficient in memory footprint that any normal texture map, as far as I know.

Re: Ptex library
Hey, sorry for bringing this thread to life again, but just saw the Pixar Ptex presentation over at The Area and certainly this looks awesome.
With Ptex support in mudbox, this technology could potentially have a very broad user base and be an incitement for 3delight support ;)

Re: Ptex library
Ptex is also available in Houdini 11 and is coming to Mari too - in partnership with Disney:
